On Tuesday, bluegrass phenom Billy Strings shared a five-song set recorded live on October 16th at Nashville’s Station Inn as part of Country Music Week. Presented by C2C, this year’s Country Music Week has pivoted to an online format featuring performances, interviews, showcases, and more.
Among the performers for Country Music Week Digital are Ashley McBryde, Brett Eldredge, Cam, Carly Pearce, Chris Young, Danielle Bradbery, Ingrid Andress, Kalie Shorr, Lady A, Lindsay Ell, Midland, Morgan Wallen, Runaway June, Ruthie Collins, Scotty McCreery, Tenille Townes, The Shires, Twinnie, Ward Thomas, and more.
This performance from the venerable Nashville venue found a much different Billy Strings than audiences are usually accustomed to. Donning a blazer with cuffed blue jeans and black leather boots, the young picker was a far cry from the typical bowl-smoking, tie-dye wearing Billy that many know and love. This prim-and-proper Strings was playing for a general audience bereft of hee-hawing.
As such, the five-song, 14-minute set saw little in the way of big jams as he performed by himself atop a wooden stool. Instead, his songwriting and lyricism capabilities were on full display much more than his guitar-picking prowess, thought the latter ability is inescapable during any performance. Kicking off with the Doc Watson oldie “Nashville Blues”, the musician gave a tip of the cap to his musical—and physical—home. After that he remained strictly in his own catalog with “Love Like Me” from 2019’s Home, followed by the pairing of “While I’m Waiting Here” into “Cumberland Reel”. Finally the session came to a close with a quick run through his seminal hit “Dust In A Baggie”.
