Bruce Springsteen was among the guests on Wednesday’s A Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The Boss discussed his new album, Letter To You, his favorite Bob Dylan songs, his appreciation for Lana Del Rey, getting his own emoji and more over the course of three segments.
Letter To You is due out this Friday via Columbia Records. Springsteen explained how the death of an old band mate from his days in The Castiles informed his writing for the 12-track LP that includes themes of mortality and lifespan. Bruce also recalled the process of recording Letter To You with The E Street Band, what his time in The Castiles meant to him and how he’s staying creative during the pandemic as part of the first segment.
Colbert asked Springsteen about his favorite Bob Dylan songs during their second segment together. Bruce struggled to pick one over another but did eventually answer the question. The Boss revealed he changed his writing style early in his career when he was being compared to Dylan and wishes he didn’t make that decision so quickly. Additionally, Stephen and Bruce shared their love for Lana Del Rey’s 2020 studio album, Norman Fucking Rockwell!, and the song “The Greatest” in particular.
The final segment saw Colbert query Springsteen on the loss of John Prine. Bruce spoke of his appreciation for the late singer-songwriter and getting to known him over the course of their careers. A lighter moment came next when Stephen told The Boss he now has his own emoji. Colbert had to explain exactly what that means. Springsteen closed out his appearance by performing a portion of Letter To You track “Last Man Standing.”
