Dumpstaphunk shared the single “Justice 2020” featuring Trombone Shorty And Chali 2na, which arrived with an accompanying music video. The track will land on the New Orleans funk outfit’s upcoming album, Where Do We Go From Here, set for a Spring 2021 release via Mascot Label Group / The Funk Garage.
Dumpstaphunk released the title track to Where Do We Go From Here in August to mark the 15-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The new single, “Justice 2020,” is an updated version of Dumpstaphunk’s 2016 single, “Justice.” The band released the track just after the 2016 presidential election and it is an ongoing anthem for the social justice movement.
“We wrote ‘Justice’ at a time when a lot of things were going on,” Dumpstaphunk keyboardist and founding member Ivan Neville said in a statement. “Myself, Nick [Daniels] and Tony [Hall] were kids during the Sixties and Seventies, so we saw a lot of shit growing up, and we see the same stuff still going on: the systemic racism, the racial profiling, all the social injustice. We’re at a crossroads right now in this country, and some shit’s got to change.”
The video for “Justice 2020” features “news footage from the past four years, as well as archival footage from throughout the 20th century, illustrating the long battle for social justice in the US, and to remind viewers to get out and vote,” as per a press release.
