Britain’s own Elvis Costello appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week to perform the title track off his forthcoming album, Hey Clockface. Keys mastermind Jon Batiste joined Costello for the performance, which aired late Wednesday night and also saw them perform his 1979 track, “Party Girl”.
Prior to the performance, Costello and Colbert caught up a bit, as the show’s host noted how he hadn’t seen his “favorite rock artist” in quite a while. Towards the end of the interview, Colbert referenced how politicians, most notably President Donald Trump, have used musicians’ songs during campaign rallies without obtaining the rights. He then asked Costello what song he believed would fit well with a Trump rally, and Costello went on to read the lyrics to a song from his forthcoming musical adaptation of the 1957 film, A Face in the Crowd,
If you’re tired of the lies of politicians and of preachers, you can put your trust in me/Help me be your brother’s keeper/If you pay too many taxes, think salvation should cheaper, just say ‘blood and hot sauce’/When the bailiffs are at the door and you want to venge your spleen, Vaseline my pompadour, I’m twice the man you should’ve been/And round the ammunition and the gasoline/Just say blood and hot sauce.’”
The musical portion of the appearance saw Costello passionately sing one of his newest tracks, “Hey Clockface/How Can You Face Me?”, while Batiste stroked his keys with purpose. Not featured on the television airing of the show, but on the web-based “Play At Home” series, was a take on “Party Girl”, which Costello originally released in 1979 on his album Armed Forces. This rendition saw Costello strumming his electric guitar while providing gruff vocals over Batiste’s remote piano once again.
