Grateful Dead Announce ‘American Beauty: The Angel’s Share’, Release Demos [Listen]

99

The Grateful Dead will once again dig into the vaults to release American Beauty: The Angel’s Share. This archival release won’t be a concert, but will rather feature outtakes, demos, and more from the recording of 1970’s American Beauty, in honor of the record’s 50th anniversary.

This comes as the second installment of The Angel’s Share, following the release of studio material from Workingman’s Dead this past summer. Those outtakes and other recordings were also heavily featured in the first season of The Good Ol’ Grateful Deadcast, expected to soon return for a new season about American Beauty.

Announced via the band’s social media pages on Thursday, the Grateful Dead promised never-before-heard recordings as well as “between song antics compiled from dozens of recently discovered 16-track reels including multiple outtakes.” Along with the announcement, the Dead shared 10 demos from the sessions, featuring nine songs from the original album as well as “To Lay Me Down” which was ultimately cut in place of “Box of Rain”.

Similar to Workingman’s Dead: The Angel’s Share, this trove of previously unreleased material offers a bevy of insight to the curious Deadhead. Starting with the fact that “Ripple” is named “Hand Me Down”, this collection opens up a plethora of possibilities about how the now-classic album could have come out different.

The full digital release of American Beauty: The Angel’s Share will feature 56 tracks and is available October 15th. Click here to stream the first 10 demos and pre-order the whole collection.
