Kazakhstan’s Tourism Board Is Using Borat’s “Very Nice!” For Their New Slogan

103

The country of Kazakhstan has long been outraged by their portrayal in the 2006 film, Borat. Now, after years of trying to distance their nation from the film and with the release of Borat 2, they’ve finally given in. “Very Nice!” is the new slogan employed by their tourism board and well, very nice?

The infamous Borat catchphrase lends itself to Kazakhstan’s new series of ads, encouraging tourism. It shows aesthetic AF mountains, bustling markets, and a bunch of delish-looking cuisine, as well as city views. With a tourist in each location saying some variation of, “very nice.” Just sans the ridic accent.

The deputy chairman of Kazakhstan’s tourism board, Kairat Sadvakassov, spoke with The New York Times.

“In COVID times, when tourism spending is on hold, it was good to see the country mentioned in the media,” he told the publication. “Not in the nicest way, but it’s good to be out there.”

“We would love to work with Cohen, or maybe even have him film here.”

Creator and star of the film, Sacha Baron Cohen told New York Times, “I chose Kazakhstan because it was a place that almost nobody in the U.S. knew anything about, which allowed us to create a wild, comedic, fake world.”

“The real Kazakhstan is a beautiful country with a modern, proud society — the opposite of Borat’s version.”
