On Tuesday, NPR Music released the latest installment of its retooled Tiny Desk (Home) Concert series, this time featuring Christone “Kingfish” Ingram. The venerable bluesman appeared with a simple setup of just him alongside bassist Paul Rogers.
Kingfish is coming off the release of a recent single, entitled “Rock & Roll“, which came out back in July. Though he only has one full-length album under his belt, the 21-year-old guitarist has already made a name for himself through marathon touring which has obviously been put on hold as a result of the pandemic.

Opening up with his debut single “Fresh Out”, which came out just over a year-and-a-half ago in February 2019, the musician puts on a four-minute guitar clinic and a refresher on why he has risen to the top of the contemporary blues scene in such a short amount of time. Not one for idle chitchat, Ingram next launched into the John Lee Hooker-inspired riff of “Outside of This Town”. In some ways, its strange to see such a nubile face and voice embody the spirit of the blues so well, but Ingram finds a way to pull it off and make his pain authentic after only 21 short years on this Earth.
Despite the limitations imposed by the Tiny Desk (Home) Concert format, Ingram encouraged audience participation on his next number, “Listen”. The song, which he characterized as a “happy vibe and not so much of some blues,” lent itself to some well-timed claps from behind the screen. It certainly isn’t conventional for a bluesman to write a song about sunshine brighting up his life, but Kingfish is certainly no conventional bluesman. Finally, the session wrapped up with “Rock & Roll”, Ingram’s latest single and a tribute to his dearly-departed mother. The slow, tender song allowed a quick return to the blues and offered one last reminder of just who Kingfish is.
