One year ago today the Tedeschi Trucks Band welcomed a bevy of guests at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The sit-ins included Wilco guitarist Nels Cline and singer-songwriter Amy Helm, daughter of the late great Levon Helm.
For those missing the great collaborations TTB always coordinates during their annual Beacon residency — which usually takes place around this time and follows in the footsteps of Derek Trucks‘ former band, The Allman Brothers, who always delivered stellar collaborations during their famed “March Madness” runs at the storied Upper West Side venue — this edition of Throwback Thursday showcases TTB’s star-studded show from October 1, 2019. The concert also featured Midnight North’s Grahame Lesh, North Mississippi Allstars guitarist Luther Dickinson and Birds of Chicago’s Allison Russell who all performed in opening band Capitol Sun Rays.
The 12-piece kicked things off the show with a slew of originals along with Bob Dylan’s “Down In The Flood.” Nels Cline would emerge for the Derek & The Dominoes’ classic “Bell Bottom Blues” and would stay on for the TTB original “Idle Wind.” Next came time for a brief acoustic number which saw Trucks welcoming Luther Dickinson on the debut of T-Bone Walker’s “Mean Old World” and Susan Tedeschi lending her voice at the end. Luther would remain aboard for a full band “Joyful Noise” from the Derek Trucks Band days as well as Charles Segar’s “Key To The Highway.” TTB would close out the set alone with Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “I Pity The Fool.”
The band reemerged for the encore with Amy Helm, Grahame Lesh and Allison Russell in tow for Bob Dylan’s “Going, Going Gone.” Helm would stay on to help sing “Get What You Deserve,” a song DTB featuring Levon Helm used to perform.
