Phish Plays ‘Guyutica’ Set On Fall Tour 2010

93

This year marks 25 years since Phish’s historic Fall Tour 1995. In recognition of that noteworthy tour and to make up for the lack of shows this fall, JamBase presents a daily retrospective highlighting a noteworthy moment from a Phish fall tour concert that took place on that date over the past 25 years. The 25 Years Of Phish Fall Tour series runs each day between the start of Phish Fall Tour 1995 on September 27 through that tour’s finale on December 17.

Phish’s concert on October 20, 2010 became known as “Guyutica” due the frequency of “Guyute” teases the band played that night in Utica, New York. The Fall Tour 2010 show was later released as the live album, Live In Utica.

Phish Performs 'Bill Bailey' With Dr. Jack McConnell On Fall Tour 2010

Phish Performs ‘Bill Bailey’ With Dr. Jack McConnell On Fall Tour 2010

Phish’s fall tour history on October 20 includes playing the Hampton Coliseum in 2018 opening with a slow version of “Llama” and in 2013 when they debuted a cover of “Takin’ Care of Business.” They taped an appearance for Sessions at West 54th in 1998, which later aired on PBS. Phish also performed in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on October 20, 1995 featuring “Amazing Grace” with Johnny “Bagpipes” Johnston on electric bagpipes.

Phish’s show on October 20, 2010 was their only appearance to date at Utica Memorial Auditorium. While it was their first time performing in Utica, it was not the first time they infused a song into a set by teasing or quoting it while playing other songs in the set. Previous and subsequent “themed” sets like “Guyutica” include “Moby Dick” at Deer Creek in 2000, “I Saw It Again” at Merriweather Post Pavilion in 2010, “Martian Monster” at The Mann in 2015, or several instances of “Crosseyed And Painless” tease-fests (2019, 2017, 2016, 2016, 2011).

Guitarist Trey Anastasio, keyboardist Page McConnell, bassist Mike Gordon and drummer Jon Fishman kicked off their first set in Utica with “My Soul,” and the Clifton Chenier cover was followed by Phish’s own blues-rocker, “Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan.” The scarcely performed “Vultures” came next ahead of “Wolfman’s Brother” that incorporated a vocal jam. Trey also teased “Streets Of Cairo” during “Wolfman’s” which segued into “Cities” that saw Trey change the lyrics of the Talking Heads cover to “Genesee factory” instead of “dry-ice factory” in reference to New York-based Genesee brewery.

Trey then counted off “Guyute” for its first of many appearances that night. Here’s how Chris Bertolet described the Utica “Guyute” for Phish.net’s history of the song:

Certainly the most noteworthy Phish reading of “Guyute” in recent years took place in Utica, NY, on 10/20/10. The ultra-playful first set of that particular show has been dubbed “Guyutica” by fans – a moniker that appeared that night in Utica on a sign held aloft by a fan who was adorned in a Mexican wrestling mask. While the “Guyute” proper was not especially noteworthy, the pig continued to rear its head throughout the set, with unpredictable, creative quotes in “David Bowie,” “Wilson,” and “Run Like an Antelope.”

Phish.net further expands on the “Guyute” teases in the setlist show notes, stating:

“David Bowie” featured “Guyute” teases throughout the intro, as well as several sections of “Wilson” jamming with “Guyute” lyrics during the song proper. “Wilson,” “Saw it Again” and “Run Like An Antelope” all included “Guyute” teases from Trey, and Page also teased “Guyute” at the very end of “Antelope” (This show is referred to by many fans as “Guyutica”). The “Antelope” intro also contained “Wilson” and “Nellie Kane” teases from Mike. “Wilson” also had its lyric changed to “I must inquire Guyute” and Trey teased “Guyute” instead of saying “Marco Esquandolas” in “Antelope.”

While the “Guyutica” shenanigans ended with the first set, the second set had memorable moments, such as the opening pairing of “Drowned” into “Sand,” a tender “Tela” and an outstanding sequence of “Split Open And Melt” into “Have Mercy” into “Piper” back into “Split Open and Melt.” Stream Phish: Live In Utica 2010 and watch pro-shot video highlights below:
