Phish & Tom Marshall Perform The Who Cover On Fall Tour 1999

131

This year marks 25 years since Phish’s historic Fall Tour 1995. In recognition of that noteworthy tour and to make up for the lack of shows this fall, JamBase presents a daily retrospective highlighting a noteworthy moment from a Phish fall tour concert that took place on that date over the past 25. The 25 Years Of Phish Fall Tour series runs each day between the start of Phish Fall Tour 1995 on September 27 through that tour’s finale on December 17.

Phish lyricist Tom(my) Marshall teamed up with the band for a The Who cover on this date during Fall Tour 1999. Marshall handled lead vocals on Phish’s lone version of “We’re Not Gonna Take It” on October 8, 1999 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.

The quartet made their Nassau Coliseum debut with two concerts that kicked off the famed Island Tour on April 2 and 3, 1998. Phish returned the following fall for a pair of performances, which marked the penultimate stop of the run. It would be four more years until the band visited the Long Island venue on February 28, 2003. Another show came that fall on November 28, 2003 and Phish then played a renovated Nassau Coliseum this past December.

Marshall’s guest spot on October 8, 1999 took place towards the end of a second set that began an adventurous 35-minute pairing of “Halley’s Comet” and “Tweezer.” The band’s second Fall Tour 1999 performance at Nassau Coliseum was also notable for a beefy segment in which “Meat” was followed by a “Meatstick” featuring a guest appearance from keyboardist Page McConnell‘s then-wife Sofi Dillof for the “Meatstick Dance.”

Phish began “We’re Not Gonna Take It” nearly 70 minutes into the closing stanza. “We’re gonna get our special friend Tom Marshall to come up and sing on this next one,” guitarist Trey Anastasio said in introducing his childhood friend and longtime writing partner. Marshall’s previous appearances with Phish were of the more humorous variety including covers of Chumbawamba’s “Tumthumping,” Oasis’ “Champagne Supernova” and “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers. On “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” Tom took a more serious tone to his singing in belting out the song. At one point, he put his arm around Trey as the pair sang the “listening to you” coda.

Pete Townshend wrote “We’re Not Gonna Take It” as part of The Who’s 1969 concept album/rock opera, Tommy. While “We’re Not Gonna Take It” was only played once by Phish, the band performed Tommy instrumental “Sparks” 14 times between 1987 and 2016. Additionally, the four-piece covered The Who’s 1973 concept album/rock opera, Quadrophenia, in its entirety as part of a Halloween show on October 31, 1995 that ended with their lone rendition of “My Generation.”
