On Saturday, October 3rd, 50+ artists and 10+ speakers came together for Democracy Comes Alive, a one-day virtual music festival aimed at channelling the power of music to make a critical impact on civic participation in this November’s elections and beyond. The 10-hour streaming event, powered by Nugs.TV and Plus 1, generated $40,000 and counting in funds for voter registration nonprofit HeadCount, as well as the participating artists, who remain out of work as the pandemic continues. In addition to the funds generated, Democracy Comes Alive led thousands of people to HeadCount’s tools to check your voter registration status and register to vote.

Among the many talented acts to offer up virtual performances for the event was The Nth Power, who delivered a three-song medly that began with a cover of Marvin Gaye‘s “God Is Love” and segued through The Nth Power originals “Altar Call” and “Freedom”. Before the music started, however, drummer and vocalist Nikki Glaspie, who was a host of Justice Comes Alive, had something to say.

Rest in power and peace Ruth Bader Ginsberg, John Lewis, Reverend C.T. Vivian, and all the freedom fighters we’ve lost along the way. We thank you and the countless others who sacrificed and fought for our individual human rights. Everyone please exercise your right to vote, your voice makes a difference. Continue the good fight, no matter how hopeless it all seems, we got this. Always remember: The Nth Power loves you.

With that, the “Absolute” Nth Power—comprised of Glaspie, Nick Cassarino, Nate Edgar, Nigel Hall, and Weedie Braimah—dive into the tune from 1971’s iconic What’s Going On. The Nth Power’s musical prowess is on full display as they weave through the late singer’s timeless lyrics. A beautiful keyboard solo from Hall flows directly into a searing guitar solo from Cassarino in the song’s outro. As Hall’s square fades out, Courtney Smith‘s fades in, and before you know it, the band has seamlessly transitioned into instrumental “Altar Call”, a favorite from The Nth Power’s 2015 album, Abundance. Before long, however, the jam shoots out the other side into The Nth Power original “Freedom” to close out the performance.
