Umphrey’s McGee Honors Eddie Van Halen In Atlanta

64

Umphrey’s McGee kicked off their Drive In At The Speedway run on Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway. UM honored legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen, who sadly died earlier this week, with a quick rendition of “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love” at the end of the first set.

Umphrey’s got things underway with the instrumental headbanger “Le Blitz,” which saw guitarist Jake Cinninger and keyboardist Joel Cummins dueling on guitar and synth respectively before dropping into “Educated Guess.” Guitarist Brendan Bayliss led the band on the carefully crafted verses — with Cinninger and bassist Ryan Stasik locking in — weaving between the controlled chaos of the quick, punchy instrumental sections. After “Andy’s Last Beer,” “Nothing Too Fancy” would encompass “Comma Later.” “Cemetary Walk” prefaced another segued section that kicked off with “Whistle Kids” before heading into “Utopian Fir.” As they are wont to do, UM threw in a few lines from a cover, appropriately this time around Van Halen’s “Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love,” sung by drummer Kris Myers. Umphrey’s would return to “Utopian” to close out the set.

The second set began with the classic “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” followed by “2×2.” “Ringo” then led into more vintage UM in “Kimble.” “Similar Skin” and “In The Kitchen” would close out the six-song second set. Umphrey’s McGee retook the stage for “The Weight Around” into “The Silent Type” to bring the evening proper to close.
