Watch 6 moe. Song Sandwiches

141

moe. are masters of segues and song sandwiches. The band has perfected the art of transitioning from one tune into the next over the course of their 30-year career, often patiently telegraphing the move with hints of the song to come. moe. also does a great job of presenting song sandwiches in which they fit one ore more tunes between segments of a song. For example, the quintet often starts “Rebubula” and then jam into another number before seguing back into “Rebubula’s” final section(s).

The JamBase Live Video Archive (JBLVA) features over 230 moe. videos. Included within are plenty of song sandwiches. This edition of the JamBase List contains footage of six song sandwiches pulled off by moe. between 2005 and 2019 via the JBLVA.

Let’s take a look in reverse chronological order with each video queued to the start of the sandwich:

Tubing The River Styx | February 22, 2019

moe. returned to Brooklyn Bowl in New York City on February 22, 2019 for an intimate performance ahead of a show at the much bigger Beacon Theatre the next night. The quintet opened the second set in Brooklyn with newish songs “LL3” and “Jazz Cigarette” before reaching back to 2007’s The Conch for “Tubing The River Styx.” moe. jammed the instrumental into a tune with just one lyric, “Meat.” The 13-minute “Meat” featured a xylophone solo from Jim Loughlin that the band used as a gateway back to “Tubing The River Styx.” While the video above ends after “The Pit” that followed “Tubing The River Styx,” moe. did end “Meat” later in the night.

Buster and Plane Crash | July 12, 2018

moe. had fans on their toes at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on July 12, 2018, when they jammed “Captain America” into the “math rock” section of the beloved “Buster.” The five-piece forgoed the entire beginning of the song including the verses and choruses. Guitarist Chuck Garvey took his solo to bring “Buster” to a close and moe. went on to play five more songs to end the first set including “Silver Sun.”

Then, moe. seemingly kicked off the second set with “Plane Crash.” However, it was just a fake out as less than a minute later the band played “Buster” from the start and skipped the “math rock section,” giving Garvey a second go at the solo. Later in the night, moe. would reprise “Silver Sun” and performed the “Plane Crash” hinted at earlier. The night concluded with a cover of David Bowie’s “Fame” featuring Pigeons Playing Ping Pong guitarists Greg Ormont and Jeremy Schon.

Meat | May 25, 2018

“Meat” is a song moe. has split up more often than not in recent years. On May 25, 2018, the quintet performed a late night show in the Red Barn at the Summer Camp Music Festival in Chillicothe, Illinois. moe. bookended their lone set with “Meat.” Yet, the concert is best remembered for not only the animal costumes band members wore but that “Meat” was the only song on moe.’s pre-planned setlist. The musicians took turns picking what tune to play, leading to a highlight improvisational evening.

The Road | December 13, 2013

moe. concluded their Fall Tour 2013 with a three-night stand at The Independent in San Francisco. On December 13, the middle night of the run, the band kicked off their second set with “The Road.” The five-piece worked “The Road” into oldie “Time Ed.” moe. took “Time Ed” deep for a 30-minute rendition and pulled off a slick segue back into “The Road” to the delight of the crowd.

Time Ed And Spine Of A Dog | November 9, 2012

“Time Ed” served as the filling of a song sandwich in the entry above, but on November 9, 2012 at The Capitol Theatre the tune acted as the bread. moe.’s first show at The Cap since 1995 featured a “Time Ed” that gave way to “Y.O.Y.,” which bled into “Spine Of A Dog.” The 12-minute version of “Spine Of A Dog” faded into the end of “Time Ed.” moe. wasn’t done with the song sandwich shenanigans, as they transitioned from the conclusion of “Time Ed” into the spot where left off in “Spine Of A Dog” — a rare double decker sandwich.

The Pit | June 10, 2005

moe. played a pair of concerts at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine on June 10 and 11, 2005 that were recorded for possible release as a live album. As such, the band didn’t allow taping. While the performances weren’t issued as a live album, some of the shows made it onto the live/studio hybrid album The Conch in 2007. Earlier this year, moe. premiered video of both concerts to end their moe.ron Mondays series. The second set on June 10, 2005 began with the pairing of “Tailspin” and “The Pit.” moe. jammed the latter into “Recreational Chemistry” and then worked “She” into “The Road,” which in turn gave way to an instrumental conclusion of “The Pit.”
