This week Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires released a collaborative single “The Problem” coinciding with International Safe Abortion Day. They also confirmed socially distanced concerts in November, to go along with the married couple’s upcoming drive-in and socially distanced gigs with Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit.
Also this week, Shires and Isbell were featured in a Tiny Desk (Home) Concert for NPR Music, performing three songs from the Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit album, Reunions, that came out in May. Releasing new songs, playing mini-concerts and scheduling socially distanced shows are just a few of the ways Shires and Isbell have stayed active during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. Shires, accompanied by Isbell more often than not, launched the I So Lounging livestream series from the couple’s home studio in Tennessee in early March and continued daily through mid-April. The episode that streamed on April 8, 2020 was the most emotional of the early run. Taking place the day after Isbell and Shires’ friend and mentor John Prine died from COVID-19, the couple and Shires’ band mate, guitarist Seth Plemmons paid tribute to the beloved singer-songwriter by playing a set of his songs. Seen above, they honored the legendary musician with covers of “Angel From Montgomery,” “Clocks And Spoons” and “Illegal Smile.”

The I So Lounging: Second Wave came back in weekly format in August. The second edition has regularly featured Shires’ frequent collaborator, keyboardist Peter Levin alongside the pair (one episode featured Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford). The Second Wave episode above featues covers of covers of songs by Bon Iver, Eric Clapton and Richard Buckner. Shires meant for the episode’s theme to be songs with female names in the title, ber selection of Buckner’s “Ariel Ramirez” led to her learning that the song was named after a man, Argentine composer Ariel Ramírez.

As mentioned above, in May Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit released their new album, Reunions. The night of the record’s release, Isbell and Shires (who is a member of The 400 Unit) played a concert at an empty Brooklyn Bowl Nashville, one of the first official events held at the new concert space and bowling alley that has not fully opened due to COVID-19. The pair played the 10 tracks on Reunions in order at the mostly vacant venue.

“I’ve watched this guy grow up literally to be pretty much the preeminent singer-songwriter of his generation, but he is seriously, seriously over-married,” said Steve Earle when introducing Isbell and Shires last December at Earle’s annual benefit concert. The couple can be seen playing “Swimmer,” a song written by Shires — a super talented singer-songwriter as well — from her 2018 album, To The Sunset. Shires and Isbell will look beyond their own songbooks from time to time to play covers. One song that’s been in their repertoire for years is “Mutineer” by the beloved late singer-songwriter Warren Zevon. In 2015, Shires and Isbell released a recording of the title track to Zevon’s 1995 album. Pre-dating that, the footage “Mutineer” above comes from 2013 during an in-studio appearance at WNRN radio station in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Along with playing other people’s songs, Isbell and Shires have shared the stage with an impressive roster of fellow musicians. In this video, the duo expands to a trio with the addition of legendary singer-songwriter Emmylou Harris. Dueting with Isbell on “Tupelo” from his 2017 album The Nashville Sound, Shires shows off her fiddle skills especially well in the video above recorded at the Country Music Hall of Fame concert in December 2017.

Isbell’s acclaimed 2013 solo album, Southeastern, begins with the song “Cover Me Up.” The lyrics chronicle the development of Isbell and Shires’ relationship and the former’s sobriety. Isbell was named Artist Of The Year at the 2014 Americana Music Awards, also earning Best Album honors for Southeastern and Best Song for “Cover Me Up.” Sharing the stage with guitarist Ry Cooder, Isbell and Shires played the award-winning “Cover Me Up” at the 2014 Americana Music Awards show, which can be viewed above.
