Brad Sands returned to the Osiris Media podcast Under The Scales to discuss Phish‘s November 1995 history. Sands, who filled various roles on the band crew including road manager from 1994 to 2004, previously appeared on the podcast hosted by Phish lyricist Tom Marshall in 2018.
Sands and Marshall look back at the pivotal month on Phish’s historic Fall Tour 1995. They start by examining the impact of covering The Who’s Quadrophenia on Halloween and compare it to the previous year’s attempt at The Beatles’ The White Album. Sands notes the similarities between the relationships between Pete Townshend and Keith Moon and that of Trey Anastasio and Jon Fishman. Sands later explains the significance of setting up a practice room backstage for Halloween that became standard practice for the band.
Another topic of discussion was the relevance of fall 1995 being the first tour following the death of Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia and the impact on Phish’s already steady growth into larger venues and arenas. Sands later reveals Phish was asked to open the two shows in Chicago at Soldier Field in July 1995 that ended up being the band’s final concerts. Sands and Marshall then work their way through the shows on Phish’s November 1995 itinerary, occasionally breaking down particular aspects of the setlists and dropping in live audio recording examples.
Sands details a day off in Florida spent with Jimmy Buffett (by Trey and Page McConnell) and Butch Trucks (by Fish and Mike Gordon). Both Buffett and Trucks wound up sitting-in with Phish that night in West Palm Beach.
