Multi-hyphenate Brandi Carlile is set to add published author to her list of career accomplishments with the forthcoming release of her first memoir, Broken Horses. Announced on Thursday, the autobiographical work is set for release on April 6th, 2021 from the Random House Publishing imprint Crown.
The book will be available in hardcover and paperback formats, as well as in audiobook form with narration read by the artist herself.
In an interview with Rolling Stone over the summer, Carlile previewed the book by saying, “It is about the way certain profound experiences of my life have led to me creating important art for myself. So, it’ll be like this experience, the catharsis and then the songs, the handful of songs that came from that experience. That’s kind of how all my chapters are broken down.”

Broken Horses will take readers and listeners alike through Carlile’s path to stardom. From her upbringing in an impoverished-yet-loving household to her first big break opening up for Dave Matthews Band. Along the way, she examines her own good fortune to have worked with so many of her idols—from Elton John to Dolly Pardon to Pearl Jam. The book is also deeply personal, as it highlights Carlile’s ever-present balancing act of being a Grammy-winning artist as well as a mother to her two children and a supportive partner to her wife, Catherine Carlile.
