Next month, Courtney Barnett will emerge from quarantine to deliver a special livestream set to air around the globe. Dubbed From Where I’m Standing, the indie-alt rocker will perform from the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne, Australia on December 17th.

The fan-less concert will air live and audiences will subsequently be able to tune in to the most convenient timezone for them. This show will mark Barnett’s first public performance since her sold-out fundraising gigs at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne for wildfire relief back in January.

These past few months have seen the characteristically-active singer-songwriter ground to a halt as a result of the pandemic. Her native city of Melbourne was placed under lockdown for 100 days, which forced Barnett to abandon all touring plans and instead resign to an apartment and hunker down for the foreseeable future. Over the course of the lockdown, she was able to write some new material that she will debut during From Where I’m Standing alongside her bandmates Bones Sloane and Dave Mudie, in addition to the band’s new cellist Lucy Waldron.

“I’m so excited to play with my band again, for the first time in nearly a year! Gonna play some old songs and some brand new ones,” Barnett said in a statement. “It’ll be a special little show in an incredible huge space.”

Directed by filmmaker Derry Sheehan, the stream will see Barnett and company perform right in the middle of the landmark Melbourne building. Constructed in 1880 for the Melbourne International Exhibition, the Royal Exhibition Building became the first structure in the entire country to receive UNESCO World Heritage Listing. The connection to the REB goes even deeper for Courtney Melba Barnett, as she was named after famed opera soprano Dame Nellie Melba, whose father designed the building where Melba also performed in 1907.

The stream’s title, From Where I’m Standing, comes from Barnett’s song “City Looks Pretty”, off 2018’s Tell Me How You Really Feel. The song was originally inspired by a period of self-imposed isolation and has since achieved even deeper meaning for Barnett in light of recent events.
