The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live archive video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This entry highlights the Dead’s performance of “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleloo” at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington, D.C. on July 12th, 1989.
This show came as the first of a two-night run at RFK, which was released in full back in 2017. These concerts saw the Dead face off against the elements as they played through pouring rain and as stifling humidity. Like the consummate pros they are, the weather flows right off the Grateful Dead’s back as they offer this spirited performance of the Wake of the Flood classic, pushing it to the nine-minute mark with inspiring improvisation toward the end.
Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux notes in the video’s description,
Usually a show-opener in its last 20 years in the setlist, this version from RFK 1989 was played as the third song of the first set, always fun to see the Dead mix things up from the usual setlist format.
