Twenty-eight years ago today, Phish rolled into University of Central Florida Arena in Orlando, FL and broke out a “Stash” for the ages. This nearly 40-minute, overstuffed jam sandwich started off with the Picture of Nectar track, only to light off a segue train that ran through Dizzy Gillespie‘s “Manteca”, back into “Stash”, into an alternate arrangement of “Dog Faced Boy”, and finally back into “Stash”.
The historic jam came during set two, which began with a stereotypically-1995, peak-filled run through “Maze” followed by a modest telling of “Gumbo”. What came next is what made the show noteworthy as Phish fired up the “Stash” that would get the ball rolling. After over 15 minutes of laser-focused jams, the band took a brief detour through “Manteca”. In the midst of the hard-driving “Stash” jam, “Manteca” brought a couple minutes of relief before Phish plummeted down another hill on this rollercoaster of improvisation and returned to “Stash”. After resuming “Stash” like nothing had happened, the jams built back up until reaching a critical mass, at which point Trey Anastasio grabbed the emergency break and took a hard turn into “Dog Faced Boy”.
For this rendition of the Hoist track, things immediately got deep and dark as Page McConnell offered sparing low-register grand piano notes and Jon Fishman contributed lone cymbal taps. Even as Trey’s vocals came in, the whole thing was eerie—like going through a tunnel in a water slide, just waiting for the bottom to drop out from under you. Sure enough, it did as the band got into heavily distorted freeform noises before a final reprise of “Stash” provided some structure on which to land.
