Today marks four years since The Black Crowes keyboardist Eddie Harsch died. Harsch joined the band in 1991 and would remain a member until 2006. In Fall 2016, Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson announced Harsch as a member of The Magpie Salute — which contained a number of Crowes members — but Harsch sadly died on November 4, 2016. Crowes frontman Chris Robinson released this message after the keyboardist’s death:
I’m sad to say goodbye to my old friend and one of my great musical teachers, Ed Harsch. Thank you Ed, I will miss you. -CR
A member of The Black Crowes as they gained international stardom in the early 1990s, the keyboardist was on board when the band performed at the Grugahalle in Essen, Germany on November 15 to headline the 1996 Rockpalast Festival which also included sets by Seattle grunge pioneers The Screaming Trees, Mark Oliver Evertt’s Eels and more. The Crowes would deliver a set featuring songs from their latest album at the time, Three Snakes and One Charm, and more for the European festival play.
The Black Crowes kicked things off with a trio of songs from Three Snakes in “One Too Many Mirrors,” “Bring On, Bring On” and “Evil Eye.” The Crowes then got into material from their previous albums beginning with the title track to their 1990 breakthrough debut LP, Shake Your Money Maker. After “Ballad In Urgency,” Harsch would lead the band on piano into a triumphant jam that then headed into the stellar song, “Wiser Time,” both tunes off 1994’s Amorica. The band continued with “Thick N’ Thin,” “Nonfiction,” “She Gave Good Sunflower,” “Chevrolet,” “High Head Blues” and “Stare It Cold.” Next, The Crowes returned to Three Snakes with “Good Friday” before closing out the festival set with their classic cover of the Otis Redding popularized, “Hard To Handle.”
