BIG Something brought back some fond memories of last New Year’s Eve with footage of their cover of “Ripple” at The Lincoln Theatre. Or rather, guitarist Nick MacDaniels‘ solo cover of the Grateful Dead classic that kicked off the double encore on December 31st, 2019.

The video comes ahead of BIG Something’s upcoming two-night run of New Year’s Eve streams, which will once again see the band perform at The Lincoln Theatre in their native Raleigh, NC. The fan-less concerts will be available to stream for free, though fans are encouraged to donate what they can as 25% of the evening’s proceeds will benefit the Lincoln.

Coming in as the first of two encores that would send the unsuspecting crowd into the year 2020, this American Beauty classic saw a solitary MacDaniels take the stage. In contrast to the dayglo neon coloring from the festive stage set up, this cover is no-frills as MacDaniels give reverence to Robert Hunter‘s immortal lyrics.

In an interesting change of pace, the rendition instead places greater emphasis on MacDaniels’ vocal capabilities which can be easily overlooked in the improv-heavy act. To bring it all home, and make viewers miss concerts somehow even more, the crowd does its part by adding a cappella vocal accompaniment with the well-known words and even the “la da dahs” that close out the tune.
