Bill Frisell performed a “Red Sofa Concert” for the New York Guitar Festival. The Grammy-winning guitarist delivered a song from his own catalog as well as a handful of genre-spanning covers.
Frisell kicked off the instrumental performance with three-song acoustic set that saw the renowned guitarist playing his tune “Rambler” on a Martin 1966 Martin 00-21 New Yorker classical style guitar. Frisell continued with “Lotus Blossom,’ a composition by longtime Duke Ellington pianist and collaborator Billy Strayhorn who also wrote the jazz standard “Take The A Train.” Frisell concluded the acoustic set with the Hal David and Burt Bacharach classic “What The World Needs Now Is Love.”
For the second section, Bill plugged in a 1962 Gibson ES-335 electric guitar and began with two Thelonius Monk tunes: “Crepuscule with Nellie” and “Misterioso.” The former Monk composed in 1957 while the latter dates to the late 1940s. Frisell then delivered the Charles Albert Tindley hymn, “We Shall Overcome,” which became an important anthem in the civil rights movement. Frisell then switches gears to a country classic, Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” to close out the session.
