Bob Dylan Sells Full Songwriting Catalog To Universal

Bob Dylan’s entire catalog of songs was acquired by Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG). According to The New York Times, UMPG paid Dylan an estimated $300 million for the publishing rights to over 600 songs.

An announcement by UMPG confirming the acquisition, stated the deal spans from 1962 through the songs on Dylan’s 2020 album, Rough And Rowdy Ways. The Times reports UMPG acquired the copyrights to all of the songs Dylan has written, and his rights to several that were co-written, with one exception, “The Weight,” which Dylan owned the rights to but was credited to Robbie Robertson and recorded by The Band.

“As someone who began his career in music publishing, it is with enormous pride that today we welcome Bob Dylan to the UMG family,” said Sir Lucian Grainge, chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group. “It’s no secret that the art of songwriting is the fundamental key to all great music, nor is it a secret that Bob is one of the very greatest practitioners of that art. Brilliant and moving, inspiring and beautiful, insightful and provocative, his songs are timeless — whether they were written more than half a century ago or yesterday. It is no exaggeration to say that his vast body of work has captured the love and admiration of billions of people all around the world. I have no doubt that decades, even centuries from now, the words and music of Bob Dylan will continue to be sung and played — and cherished — everywhere.”

The 79-year-old Dylan is responsible for writing such well-known songs as “Blowin’ In The Wind,” “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” “Like A Rolling Stone,” “Lay Lady Lay,” “Forever Young,” “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” “Tangled Up In Blue” and many others. His songs have been covered more than 6,000 times. In 2016, Dylan was honored with the Nobel Prize for Literature.
