Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Billy Gibbons, Ry Cooder & More To Play Arhoolie Virtual Concert

116

Smithsonian Folkways and the Arhoolie Foundation will host a special virtual concert featuring Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Ry Cooder, Del McCoury Band and more. The livestream event will be held on Thursday, December 10 at 8 p.m. ET.

The performances are in celebtation of the 60th anniversary of Arhoolie Records and 25th anniversary of the Arhoolie Foundation. Founded in 1960 by Chris Strachwitz, Arhoolie Records was acquired by Smithsonian Folkways in 2016.

Additional livestream performers include members of Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Ruthie Foster, Charlie Musselwhite, La Marisoul & Max Baca, BeauSoleil Trio, The Savoy Family Band, The Campbell Brothers, Csókolom, Cedric Watson and La Familia Morales, as well as a special appearance by Los Tigres del Norte. Nick Spitzer of public radio’s American Routes will host the event that will include the presentation of the 3rd annual Arhoolie Awards, “honoring musicians, organizations, and individuals who carry on and uplift roots and regional musical styles,” to R&B vocalist Sugar Pie DeSanto, Cajun fiddler Courtney Granger and New Orleans educational nonprofit The Roots of Music. Tejano accordion legend Flaco Jiménez will receive the Chris Strachwitz Legacy Award as well.
