David Bowie Tribute Album From Black Artists To Feature Khruangbin, Helado Negro, More

120

A covers album in tribute to the late David Bowie featuring new recordings from Black artists will arrive next spring.

To be titled Modern Love, the covers compilation will arrive on digital formats via the British label BBE in May on a date still to be confirmed. The album will include contributions from artists including Khruangbin (“Right”), Helado Negro (“Sound & Vision”), Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (“Life On Mars”), Meshell Ndegeocello (“Fantastic Voyage”), and Sessa (“Panic In Detroit”), to name a few. The covers project was curated by Drew McFadden and BBE founder Peter Adarkwah.

The project’s lead single will be We Are KING‘s take on “Space Oddity”, which is scheduled to arrive next month on January 8th, Bowie’s birthday.

“There were so many amazing Bowie compositions to choose from but ‘Space Oddity’ has always been our favorite,” We Are KING said of their forthcoming take on 1969’s “Space Oddity” in a press statement. “It’s so visual; it has always felt like time travel in a song. It tells such a vivid and imaginative story of Major Tom’s trip through space and it was such a cool experience to reimagine what it’d be like on the voyage.”

“I felt that the connection between Bowie and Black music styles and culture (especially soul, R&B, jazz, funk, and gospel) had never really been explored before — at least not so much in covers, which tend to lean towards rock,” McFadden also added of the forthcoming compilation. “Certainly, there’s been plenty of Bowie covers over the years, but none that have really tapped into what seems to have been a big part of his core musical style and direction.”

Other artists to be featured include Matthew Tavares (“Heroes”), Jeff Parker (“Soul Love”), The Hics (“The Man Who Sold The World”), Bullion (“Where Are We Now”), Jonah Mutono (“Modern Love”), Nia Andrews (“Silly Boy Blue”), L’Rain (“Move On”), Kit Sebastian (“Lady Grinning Soul”) and Eddie Chacon feat. John Carroll Kirby (“Tonight”).
