Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools celebrates his birthday today. Born on December 11, 1964, Schools’ parents provided the foundation on which Dave could grow as a musician, starting out with piano and drums. Schools picked up the bass at 13 and honed his craft by playing along with the greats: The Who, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and more.
Schools dabbled in a couple bands in high school but it was during his tenure at the University of Georgia where he met guitarists John Bell and Michael Houser and founded what would become his full-time gig, Widespread Panic, in 1986. Drummer Todd Nance and percussionist Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz joined soon after and keyboardist JoJo Hermann rounded out the classic Widespread Panic lineup in 1992.
A few years later on May 31, 1996, Panic would make their headlining debut at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and have since amassed 62 consecutive sellouts at the iconic Colorado venue, a record that won’t easily, if ever, be broken. On June 25, 2011 Schools and WSP took the hallowed Red Rocks stage to perform for their 40th consecutive sellout. While fans of the band like to say “Never Miss A Sunday Show,” at Red Rocks it’s wise not to miss any but Saturdays are usually always heaters.
June 25, 2011 was no different. The band, including guitarist Jimmy Herring, kicked things off with the 2011 debut of the Firehose song “Sometimes,” last time played on October 27, 2010 for a gap of 33 shows, as per Everyday Companion. Next, Schools and Panic would proceed to deliver a concert full of classics including “Hatfield,” “Blue Indian” and a first set-closing “Porch Song.”
“Henry Parsons Died” would get the second set underway followed by “All Time Low,” “Down” and the relatively new song at the time “Jaded Tourist,” which saw a six year hiatus after 2011. The now rare “Tortured Artist” would begin a fully segued set-closing segment that saw a traditional Red Rocks Saturday “Chilly Water,” the classic cover “Arleen” and the rarity “Vacation,” which had been played less than 100 times at that point since its debut in 1986. The rowdy “Action Man” would close out the second set ahead of a three-song encore featuring “Up All Night” and “Bust It Big” into the Neil Young-penned Buffalo Springfield cover “Mr. Soul.”
