Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real added to their ongoing Soundcheck Songs series on Thursday with a take on “Magnolia” by J.J. Cale. This latest installment of the cover series was chosen by bandleader and descendant of country royalty Lukas Nelson.
Launched last month, Soundcheck Songs has already found the Americana outfit covering “Obvious Child” by Paul Simon, “Romeo And Juliet” by Dire Straits, “Like An Inca” by Neil Young, and “Jealous Guy” by John Lennon. Each weekly upload sees a different member of the band choosing a song.

This newest episode of the cover series features a take on the track from Cale’s 1972 debut studio album, Naturally. A true songwriter’s songwriter, Cale’s work has gone on to be covered by everyone from Eric Clapton to Widespread Panic to Billy Strings. Unfortunately, in the case of Clapton’s renditions of “Cocaine” and “After Midnight”, the success of the covers went on to surpass that of Cale himself. While he is always given his credit in liner notes and occasional verbal recognition of his immense talent, the late singer-songwriter served as an inspiration to many who came after him as well as his contemporaries.
This rendition of “Magnolia” takes on a slow waltz feel as Nelson as his boys shuffle across the floor. With his dreamy guitar tone, Nelson establishes a sleek mood that is only bolstered by Cale’s vivid lyricism. Meanwhile, percussionist Tato Melgar adds the perfect accent with his hand drums to provide a tinge of originality to the cover.
