This year marks 25 years since Phish’s historic Fall Tour 1995. In recognition of that noteworthy tour and to make up for the lack of shows this fall, JamBase presents a daily retrospective highlighting a noteworthy moment from a Phish fall tour concert that took place on that date over the past 25 years (read a note on Fall 1997 here). The 25 Years Of Phish Fall Tour series runs each day between the start of Phish Fall Tour 1995 on September 27 through that tour’s finale on December 17.
December 2nd is one of the most special days in Phish history, as the band played their first gig together on this date in 1983. So, it’s only fitting one of the best versions of a jam vehicle beloved by fans took place on December 2, 1995. Twenty-five years ago, Phish unleashed a “Tweezer” for the ages during their second set at the New Haven Memorial Coliseum in New Haven, Connecticut.
While Phish’s Fall Tour 1995 featured a number of standout “Tweezers,” none come close to matching the heights of what quickly became known as the “New Haven Tweezer.” The 15-minute barn burner the band laid down in New Haven is an all-killer, no-filler affair light on noodling and exploration but heavy on ferocity and balls to the wall rock and roll.

Phish Plays ‘Wipe Out’ Set In Worcester On Fall Tour 1998
All four members of the band played their part in making the “New Haven Tweezer” special. Drummer Jon Fishman provided a bombastic beat throughout and never relented. Bassist Mike Gordon anchored the jam with a steady, pulsating bassline that varied ever so slightly, while keyboardist Page McConnell lit up the organ with powerful blasts. That leaves guitarist Trey Anastasio who drove the crowd wild with a frenetic, relentless string of riffs. The “New Haven Tweezer” came to a close with a quick romp through a cool and unusual progression akin to “Take Me To The River” in which Phish slowed down the tempo to a crawl after going so hard for 15 minutes.
Carlos Santana famously hipped Phish to the concept of the Hose, where the audience functions as a sea of flowers that the band waters by acting a vessel to let the music come through them. Phish fans like to use the term “Hose” to describe top-level jams. The “New Haven Tweezer” is a “Hose” jam at its finest.
Phish’s December 2, 1995 performance in New Haven also featured a few additional highlights. The first set contains a glorious “Reba” and high-octane “Possum,” while the second set includes a memorable “Maze” that hints at what would follow as well as the 12th and final version of “Faht” in Phish history.
