Real Estate’s Alex Bleeker Releases ‘Mashed Potatoes’ Single

92

Real Estate’s Alex Bleeker released a new single, “Mashed Potatoes.” The song will land on his upcoming 2021 album, Heaven On The Faultline, due out on March 5th via Night Bloom Records.

Heaven On The Faultline is Bleeker’s first solo album since 2015’s Country Agenda, which saw the singer-songwriter exploring folkier sounds. The new LP “finds Bleeker getting back to his homespun roots over the course of its 13 songs, from the jangly guitar pop of New Jersey heroes the Feelies and Yo La Tengo’s hushed, acoustic reveries to the open-hearted folk-rock that marks so much of the Grateful Dead’s early catalog,” as per Bleeker’s bio written by friend Larry Fitzmaurice.

“I wanted to capture the moment in which I fell in love with making music to begin with,” Bleeker said in a statement. “This is music for myself—me getting back to music for music’s sake.”

The material for Heaven On The Faultline, written over the past several years, began as GarageBand projects in Bleeker’s bedroom before being fleshed out at co-producer Phil Hartunian’s Tropico Beauty recording facility in Los Angeles. The album also sees contributions from Confusing Mix of Nations’ Josh Da Costa, Cameron Stallones of Sun Araw, singer-songwriter Kacey Johansing and Parting Lines’ Tim Ramsey.

Additionally, the album addresses the existential anxiety people in the country are experiencing right now. “The album is very much about dealing with the anxiety of a sense of impending doom,” Bleeker added. “When is the hammer going to fall? How do we go forward in the face of such anxiety and experience the complexity of life?”

That anxiety is evident on Heaven On The Faultline lead single, “D Plus,” which Bleeker penned on Donald Trump’s inauguration day and premiered by Brooklyn Vegan in October. Alex now follows with “Mashed Potatoes,” arriving with a music video directed by Leanne Kriz which sees the Real Estate bassist showing off some dance moves.
