The Save Our Stages Act is part of the next COVID-19 stimulus package proposed by the United States Congress. The agreement expected to pass later today will provide $15 billion in relief funding for independent live music venues.
U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced the Save Our Stages Act in July. Support for the act came from the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) nd the National Independent Talent Organization (NITO).
“We’re thrilled that Congress has heard the call of shuttered independent venues across the country and provided us a crucial lifeline by including the Save Our Stages Act in the COVID-19 Relief Bill,” said Dayna Frank, owner and CEO First Avenue Productions and Board President of NIVA. “We’re also incredibly grateful that this bill provides Pandemic Unemployment Assistance which will help the millions of people who lost their jobs through no fault of their own during this economic crisis. We urge swift passage of this legislation, which will assist those in the greatest need and ensure the music lives on for generations to come.”
After months of negotiations, Congress agreed on a $900 billion COVID-19 relief package, which incorporates the Save Our Stages Act. Once passed, the government will establish a $15 billion Small Business Administration grant program for qualifying independent venues.
In October, a three-day online festival was held in support of the Save Our Stages Act. Performers who helped raise $1.8 million included Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews, and Leon Bridges, among several others.
“Thanks to musicians, fans and friends for the grassroots work to convince people in D.C. that music and theaters and venues are key to our American economy and culture,” Klobuchar wrote on Twitter. In a separate statement, Klobuchar added, “Americans need relief now, and we have worked across the aisle on a package that delivers on many key priorities including vaccine distribution and testing, as well as assistance for small businesses, including my Save Our Stages bill. It also delivers aid for schools, hospitals, and workers. We must work to pass this package as quickly as possible, and push for more aid in the New Year.”
