Star Kitchen surprised fans with a belated Christmas present on Saturday, releasing the band’s latest single, “Punches”, on Spotify via Color Red Records. “Punches” marks the second single release from the band, following their July debut, “Entirely“.
The supergroup—consisting of members Marc Brownstein (The Disco Biscuits), Marlon Lewis (Lauryn Hill/John Legend), Rob Marscher (Addison Groove Project), and Danny Mayer (Eric Krasno Band)—enlisted the help of Nate Werth (Ghost-Note/Snarky Puppy) on percussion, who also appeared on “Entirely” alongside Eddie Roberts (The New Mastersounds).

According to an Instagram post, the band recorded “Punches” last February at Color Red Studios in Denver. In a Twitter thread announcing the song’s release, Brownstein noted, “The official release is next week but it snuck onto Spotify secretly yesterday and I can’t help but blast it out.”

When compared to the more psychedelic-funk-inspired “Entirely”, “Punches” is more experimental. While Marscher’s organ and Mayer’s guitar are just as prevalent, Brownstein, Lewis, and Werth’s rhythm section really drives the song. About halfway through, the instrumental becomes a bit more exploratory. Brownstein switches up his bassline, adding more punch, while Mayer’s guitar takes the steering wheel and guides the listener through light-years of spacetime. Eventually, the band arrives back at the main groove, allowing the rhythm section to carry it home.
