Trey Anastasio of Phish performed at The Beacon Theatre in his hometown of New York City each Friday night between October 9 – November 27 for a series of The Beacon Jams livestream concerts. The Beacon Theatre team released What Calls You Home, a short documentary about the residency that includes interviews, performance highlights and behind-the-scenes footage.
The 16-minute short film details the production that went into producing the eight concerts that made up The Beacon Jams, including the decision to have the band performing with their backs to the theatre’s seats. Pianist Jeff Tanski, who was a frequent participant in the concerts at The Beacon, discusses working with Anastasio. The documentary features scenes from rehearsals along with clips from the shows. Anastasio talks about getting to interact with commenters on Twitch, the streaming platform that was new to the guitarist and hosted livestreams of the performances.
Trey explains the importance of the role the Rescue Squad Strings violinist Katie Kresek played in leading the auxiliary quartet. The guitarist also discusses the success of the Divided Sky Fund, performing with Phish drummer Jon Fishman during the Ghosts Of The Forest night of The Beacon Jams and more.
While the concerts were broadcast for free on Twitch, fans were asked to contribute to the Divided Sky Fund. More than $1 million was donated over the course of the run. The money will be used to help establish and fund an addiction rehabilitation center in Vermont.
