Trombone Shorty Surprises Grandma With Socially-Distanced Second Line On Her 91st Birthday [Watch]

While the usual music, culture, and pageantry that define New Orleans celebrations remain on hold as the pandemic continues into the new year, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews made sure to mark his grandmother’s 91st birthday with a surprise, socially-distanced celebration in true Crescent City style.

As Andrews noted in a post on his social media accounts on Monday, December 28th, “Yesterday was my grandma’s 91st birthday, so we surprised her with a lil’ birthday second line. happy birthday grandma, we love you!” Trombone Shorty shared the note along with a video of the surprise in which the lauded trombonist/bandleader and his crew don their instruments and march right up to Grandma’s door—parasols and all—for a jazzy “Happy Birthday to You”.

2020 hasn’t been kind to birthday celebrations with grandparents, but this one plays out in both safe and wholesome fashion. After opening her front door to the surprise second line, Grandma takes a moment to throw her hands in the air before ducking back inside, grabbing her mask, donning her New Orleans Saints beanie, and stepping out into her front yard to join in the revelry—as the band maintains a six-foot distance. The wholesome clip almost feels like “2020 birthdays” in a nutshell: While we can’t celebrate in the “normal” fashion, the gatherings we can safely manage feel all the more special this year.
