Umphrey’s McGee guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss performed their 18th annual holiday concert on Saturday benefitting The People’s Music School. Brendan and Jake, aka Shitty Limo, were scheduled to perform together but changed plans out of an “abundance of caution,” as per the UM website, and delivered separate livestream sets.
Cinninger — who played electric guitar and utilized backing tracks including drums, keyboards and additional guitar — kicked off the livestream from his Boondock Studios in Michigan with a seasonal original, “Lil’ Sis On Christmas,” followed by a holiday themed blues jam. Jake then performed “Mulche’s Odyssey,” a song that originated from Cinniger’s pre-UM project Ali Baba’s Tahini but has become an Umphrey’s classic as well. Cinninger kept up the UM with “End Of The Road” before offering up covers of Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s “From The Beginning” and Stone Temple Pilots “Plush.” Cinninger returned to Umphrey’s material with “Blue Echo” ahead of another holiday (and 2020) themed OG, “Santa Claus Gave Me COVID For Christmas.” A string of UM tunes followed in “Glory” and “Soul Food Parts I and II.” Cinninger closed out his set with a play on Metallica’s “Seek & Destroy” dubbed “Santa, Christmas Destroyed” and sent things over to Brendan.
Bayliss got his set from home underway with Umphrey’s “Remind Me” into Dave Matthews’ “Christmas Song.” BB continued with the William Dix classic Christmas carol, “What Child Is This?” before welcoming familiar Brendan & Jake holiday collaborator Mike Racky on pedal steel for 30db’s (Brendan’s project with the late great Jeff Austin) “One Man Show,” which was left unfinished during one of Bayliss’ ‘Wine Not?’ livestreams. A segued section of UM tunes followed with “In The Kitchen,” “Puppet String” and “Hajimemashite” all featuring Racky, who would stay on for the rest of the set.
Brendan’s’ wife Annie Bayliss then joined in to sing “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” before Brendan, on piano, and Racky continued with “Christmas Time Is Here.” Bayliss picked his guitar back up for Umphrey’s “Xmas At Wartime” which headed into UM’s “Push & Pull.” The Christmas classic “Silent Night” came next ahead of The Beatles’ “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” with BB on mandolin. Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” followed before the penultimate number of the evening, Simple Minds’ “Don’t You Forget About Me.” Annie Bayliss returned to sing “Fairytale of New York” by The Pogues to close out the stream.
