The bluegrass world lost a legend on Christmas when guitarist Tony Rice died at age 69. A video captured at the 2002 Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival recently shared by Less Than Face Productions shows Rice at his best.
While Tony collaborated with a who’s who of musical greats including Norman Blake, Bela Fleck, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, the video shared from Grey Fox features a solo performance. Rice displays his skills on the traditional “Shenandoah.”
“Shenandoah” was originally released by John Goos & The Cathedral Male Voice Quartet in 1928 as per Secondhand Songs. Tony Rice unveiled his version on his 2000 Tony Rice Unit album, Unit Of Measure. Rice’s arrangement uses dropped D tuning and features gorgeous harmonics and melodies.
