Brendan Bayliss conducted his first livesteram of the new year on Friday. The Umphrey’s McGee guitarist welcomed Andy Frasco for his newly titled ‘Dry Not, Why Not?’ series.
Bayliss began the stream by saying, “New year, same me. I’m trying to do this ‘Dry Not’ thing and it’s terribly challenging. I realized that the last 35 ‘Wine Nots’ I was blackout drunk, which is probably why they were so good.” Brendan got right into the music with a pair of Modest Mouse tunes: “The World At Large” and “Float On.” BB then addressed the audience again, “Because I’m not drinking I had to call in a ringer. I needed some support cause it’s not the easiest thing I’ve done but it’s worth it. It’s nice to not be hungover. So anyway I had to call in a friend; I needed a designated drinker tonight.” Frasco then makes a cameo with a bottle of wine and an out of tune guitar.
“Andy Came in to help me out; he’s gonna drink everything I snap,” Brendan continued before playing one of Umphrey’s McGee keyboardist Joel Cummins’ favorite UM tunes, “Roulette,” after a few tuning issues. Next up, Bayliss delivered another pair of covers in The Beatles’ “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window” and Nirvana’s “In Bloom.” Umphrey’s “Maybe Someday” came next with another Frasco cameo. Then, Bayliss debuted a new song called “Everything Is Fine” written during the pandemic with collaborator Nick Blasky. The UM classic “In The Kitchen” then led into Al Green’s “Take Me To The River” before Umphrey’s “August” headed into “Steely Dan’s “Any Major Dude Will Tell You.” Andy Frasco then joined in earnest on piano for a rendition of Andy Frasco and The U.N.’s “None Of These Things” with Andy on lead vocals and Brendan chiming in on harmonies. A duet on Wilco’s “Jesus Etc.” followed before the duo closed things out with the U.N.’s “Somedays.”
