Big Freedia Lights Up New Orleans’ Tipitina’s For Georgia Comes Alive [Watch]

On Saturday, December 26th, 50+ artists and hundreds of thousands of viewers around the world came together for Georgia Comes Alive, a virtual music festival aimed at promoting voter participation in Georgia’s critical Senate runoff elections on January 5th, 2021.

One of the many world-renowned acts to take part in the nine-hour livestream was bounce music pioneer Big Freedia, who teamed up with a pair of backup dancers for an energizing performance of “Karaoke” at one of her hometown’s many famous venues, New Orleans, LA’s Tipitina’s.

The song originally appeared on Big Freedia’s 2018 Third Ward Bounce EP with a guest appearance from Lizzo. Though Lizzo couldn’t make it for the Georgia Comes Alive set, Big Freedia and her dancers had no trouble commanding the stage inside the empty New Orleans venue on their own for an electrifying dance party early on during the all-day event. Known for her infectious energy as a bandleader and the provocative moves of her dancers—she once led hundreds in a record-setting twerking session in New York—Big Freedia’s rendition of “Karaoke” did a fine job of reminding viewers of of the unparalleled excitement that live concerts used to provide.

The marathon streaming event, powered by Nugs.TV and Plus 1, generated more than $160,000 in funds for organizations like CivicGeorgia and Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda that are putting in work on the ground to get Georgians out to the polls.
