Jacob Collier, the cross-genre multi-instrumentalist and composer whose latest album, Djesse Vol. 3, is currently nominated for “Album of the Year” at this year’s Grammy Awards, appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Tuesday to show off a stunning live performance of “Sleeping On My Dreams” from Abbey Road Studios, along with a chat with the host about his recent surge in recognition.

The twenty-six-year-old Collier appeared for his interview with Corden via video chat from the music room in his family home in North London—the very same room in which he’s written all of his songs (“This is where it’s all happened forever and ever,” he explained). In the segment, Collier spoke to Corden about the astronomical trajectory of his still-brief career.

In particular, he recognized his shock at receiving a nomination for “Album of the Year.” As Collier explained, “Everything about that moment was completely flabbergasting. I was sitting here in this exact chair, just chillin’, you know, watching the nominations come through—because everyone is already interested to know who’s up for the big awards. When my name came up on the screen, I froze. I thought, ‘This can’t be real at all.’ And I had to have a great big tall glass of water to calm myself down. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry or scream so I did a sort of combination of all three.”

“I love that that’s about as rock and roll as it gets in North London … a tall glass of water, man!” joked Corden, a fellow Brit. Collier went on to talk about his viral videos in which he spells out messages with MIDI notes in real-time. Watch the Jacob Collier interview segment from The Late Late Show below.

For his performance, Collier took viewers inside the famed Abbey Road Studios for his first-ever live performance of Djesse Vol. 3 earworm, “Sleeping On My Dreams”. From the cavernous Studio 2, Collier harkened back to the one-man-band setup that first launched his career to YouTube stardom and globetrotting tours, jumping between dozens of instruments over the course of four minutes, duetting with a player piano, simultaneously playing acoustic guitar with his hands and synths with his feet and more. It’s a performance you have to see to believe—a brief but powerful representation of the impressive compositional creativity and technical ability that are rapidly making Collier a household name.
