Jimmy Fallon & The Roots Discuss Thad Cockrell’s ‘Tonight Show’ Debut

102

Thad Cockrell‘s “Swingin’” went viral after his performance of the song with The Roots on Tuesday’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Cockrell was profiled on yesterday’s Today and “Swingin’” currently is the most popular song on iTunes. Fallon and The Roots talked about Thad during last night’s Tonight Show.

Jimmy discovered “Swingin’” during a trip to a hardware store last year. Fallon Shazamed the tune, which became his anthem during the pandemic, and arranged for Cockrell to perform “Swingin’” on his show. Meanwhile, Thad made the decision to give up on his two-decade career as a New Year’s resolution and wrote a note explaining the situation to his management just one day before Fallon reached out. Cockrell had an emotional response to finding out he would soon perform on The Tonight Show and now it appears he won’t be quitting any time soon.

Thad shared his side of the story on Today, where he revealed his new career was going to be slinging hot sauce. Cockrell described his experience performing with The Roots and how he’s handled the new-found success.

Fallon spent a few minutes discussing Cockrell with The Roots last night and was surprised to hear about Thad’s hot sauce plan. The host and his house band were excited to reveal “Swingin’” was atop the iTunes chart. Jimmy was also called out on mispronouncing the name of Cockrell’s 2020 album featuring “Swingin’,” If In Case You Feel The Same.
