Mike Dillon was a busy man last year as he recorded three albums during the pandemic, Shoot The Moon, Suitcase Man and 1918. The singer-songwriter and vibraphone ace released the albums via Bandcamp in 2020 but is now giving all three records a digital and vinyl release on March 12 via Royal Potato Family.
A highly sought after vibraphone player and percussionist, Dillon has toured with Rickie Lee Jones, Les Claypool and Ani DiFranco along with leading a number of his own bands. Forced off the road due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the prolific Dillon naturally immersed himself in the studio with producer Chad Meise in his new adopted hometown of Kansas City after living in New Orleans for 15 years.
The result is a trilogy of albums, each with different themes and feels. The first is Shoot The Moon which Dillon described as “Punkadelic-Funk-Psych” and deals with the current political climate. Shoot The Moon features contributions from Matt Chamberlain, Steven Bernstein, Nicholas Payton, Robbie Seahag Mangano, Jean-Paul Gaster, Nick Bockrath and more.
Suitcase Man is a softer, more self-reflective record. The album features sparse vibraphone and percussion along with honest lyricism. Dillon’s minimalist approach on Suitcase Man sees him welcoming just two musicans — Tiff Lamson of Givers on backing vocals and frequent collaborator JJ Jungle.
The trilogy concludes with 1918, a record that sees Dillon incorporating electronic elements into the mix. Thematically, the LP draws a line between the 1918 pandemic and the current one.
“The parallels between 1918 and 2020 are immense,” Dillon said in a statement. “We just have fancier toys, but the tunnel vision and mammalian tendencies are the same if not greater.”
