Pino Paladino and Blake Mills announced a new collaborative album, Notes With Attachments, due out on March 12 via New Deal / Impulse! The duo also shared the single, “Just Wrong.”
Recorded over the course of two years at Sound City in Van Nuys, California near Los Angeles, Notes With Attachments began as a solo project for acclaimed songwriter, producer and bassist Pino Paladino — who has worked with The Who, Keith Richards, D’Angelo and more — with Mills set to handle producing duties. But as they began to shoot ideas back and forth, Paladino realized that the record was more than a solo project.
“It all evolved from me playing Blake a few ideas, getting a reaction from [him] and seeing if he’d be interested in working on [them],” Palladino said in a statement. “As the project evolved in the first few weeks and months—even though the music was mostly coming from my original ideas, some of which I’d had for quite a while—[because of] Blake’s response to the ideas, it dawned on both of us that it would be a collaborative record.”
Paladino and Mills enlisted the help of an eclectic and seasoned group of musicians to record Notes With Attachments including drummer Chris Dave (D’Angelo, Anderson .Paak); saxophonists Sam Gendel, Marcus Strickland and Jacques Schwartz-Bart; keyboardist Larry Goldings (James Taylor, John Scofield) and more. Mills mixed the album with engineer Joseph Lorge with mastering by Greg Koller.
Mills is a highly sought after producer and multi-instrumentalist who has worked with Fiona Apple, Bob Dylan, Jim James and more. Blake released his solo album, Mutable Set, in 2020 to critical acclaim. Mills detailed Notes With Attachments single “Just Wrong” in a press release.
“With a song like this, built in layers, at various points along the road you look around and go: what is this? Where is the composition?” He said. “Sometimes you end up drawing the blueprints of the house after it’s fully been built.”
