Thad Cockrell Teams With The Roots For ‘Swingin’ On ‘Fallon’

89

Jimmy Fallon went to a hardware store last year to get a light switch when a song playing in the store caught his attention. Jimmy loved what he heard and Shazamed it to find out the tune was Thad Cockrell‘s “Swingin’.” Fallon personally reached out to Cockrell’s representatives which led to Thad’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon debut on Tuesday for a remote performance of “Swingin’” with The Roots.

“It became my anthem,” Fallon explained on Friday’s episode of The Tonight Show. “Because I’m like, when you want to give up, don’t give up! If you’re going to go down, you go down swingin’! This is my anthem, I love this song.” Jimmy’s call came just one day after Cockrell wrote his managers an email noting that he needed to explore other career options since he wasn’t able to tour behind his 2020 LP, If In Case You Feel The Same. Thad became emotional and couldn’t stop crying after finding out about his Tonight Show booking.

“Swingin’” is featured on If In Case You Feel The Same, Thad’s debut album for ATO Records. The LP was mainly produced by Tony Berg with Shawn Everett handling mixing and engineering duties. Cockrell’s band on the record consisted of guitarist Blake Mills, keyboardist Ethan Grushka, multi-instrumentalist Ian Fitchuk and drummers Blake Mills and Chris Dave. Alabama Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard, who helped convince the longtime music veteran to focus on his own music, contributes backing vocals on “Higher.”

“It just goes to show, don’t give up because some moron is going to walk into a hardware store and Shazam your song,” Fallon added last week in announcing Thad’s appearance. Cockrell was backed by The Roots for a stirring performance of Jimmy’s “anthem” last night.
