Watch Mike Gordon Bring Tour To Boulder On This Date In 2020

109

Phish bassist Mike Gordon‘s Winter Tour 2020 featured a stop at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colorado on this date one very long year ago. The show was webcast for free on LivePhish.com with the pro-shot video still available to view. JamBase takes a look at Mike’s concert in Boulder for this edition of Throwback Thursday.

Gordon and his band — guitarist Scott Murawski, drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Robert Walter and percussionist Craig Myers — kicked things off with a trio of songs from what still stands as Mike’s latest solo album, 2017’s OGOGO: “Victim,” “Acid Man” and “Stealing Jamaica.” The solo staple and a song that Phish played twice, “Say Something,” from Gordo’s 2014 LP Overstep came next. “My Favorite Mistake” initiated a continuous set closing section that included “Midi N’goni,” featuring Myers on a light up version (to go along with Mike and Scotts light up guitars) of the African instrument the n’goni. Myers had recently unveiled the instrument in Toronto earlier in the tour. “Midi N’goni,” headed into OGOGO track “Crazy Sometimes,” a song that’s found a relatively more permanent place in the Phish rotation, ahead of set closer, “Victim 3D.”

The second frame got underway with “I Am Random.” While Mike debuted the song in early 2019, he also included it on his 2020 collaborative album with Leo Kottke, Noon. OGOGO’s “Whirlwind” came next ahead of the new tune “Borrowing Rain,” which the band had debuted a little over a week before in Ithaca. A take on Max Creek’s “Jones” and the Phish rarity “Spock’s Brain” followed ahead of another newer song, the Gordon/Murawski co-write “Back In The Bubble.” The band closed out the second set with Talking Heads’ “Cities” sung by Murawski. Mike and company retook the stage for yet another recently unveiled song, “Save Me,” before bringing the evening to a close with the classic “Yarmouth Road.”
