Billy Strings returned to The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on Tuesday for his penultimate “The Déjà Vu Experiment” livestream concert. Strings and his band fit the debuts of two originals within the fifth of the run’s six shows.
The quartet — consisting of Strings, banjoist Billy Failing, mandolin player Jarrod Walker and bassist Royal Masat — are playing the venue on the same dates the Grateful Dead did 50 years prior. Billy and the guys continued to honor the 50th anniversary of the legendary GD run by performing songs from the Dead’s live repertoire and conducting an ESP Experiment each night similar to what the Dead pulled off in 1971. Lindsay Lou served as Tuesday’s “guest receiver” and spoke with Strings and his mates after the show regarding her interpretation of an image sent her way by viewers.
Billy looked to his 2019 LP ‘Home’ to get the night underway with “Taking Water.” Strings and his band worked “Taking Water” into a new instrumental original dubbed “Ice Bridges.” The guitarist then led his ensemble through covers of the Grateful Dead’s “Dire Wolf,” Bill Monroe’s “The Gold Rush” and Flatt & Scruggs’ “Bringing In The Georgia Mail.” Last night was just the group’s third “Dire Wolf” as per Phantasy Tour.
The band next played original “Watch It Fall” before pairing The Stanley Brothers’ “A Robin Built A Nest On Daddy’s Gave” and Jimmy Martin’s “Sophronie.” Billy and the guys ended the frame with two songs that were staples of acoustic Grateful Dead sets: “To Lay Me Down” and “Dark Hollow.”
The four-piece kicked off last night’s second set with the premiere of original “Fire Line.” John Hartford’s “I’m Still Here” was then followed by Old & The In The Way classic “Midnight Moonlight” and Monroe instrumental “Lonesome Moonlight Waltz.” Next up came the group’s first ever take on Héctor Varela’s “Will You Be Loving Another Man” before Billy and his crew loaded their rendition of the Grateful Dead’s “China Doll” with emotion. The band said farewell with a cover of Danny Barnes’ “Pretty Daughter” and a nicely extended “Away From The Mire.”
Billy Strings and his mates end the residency tonight and are on pace to go without repeating a song. Wednesday’s “The Déjà Vu Experiment” can be viewed for free via .
