Cris Jacobs Covers Willie Nelson, Leon Bridges & Khruangbin + More For ‘Texas Troubadour’ Livestream Concert

94

Cris Jacobs delivered his Texas Troubadours tribute on Tuesday for a special edition of his weekly livetream concert. The singer-songwriter and guitarist played songs from Willie Nelson, Leon Bridges & Khruangbin and more.

Not only was the concert a tribute to Texas artists but also a fundraiser for those affected by the recent winter storms that left many in Texas without power and water for days. Cris kicked things off on acoustic guitar with two songs from the late great Guy Clark, “Dublin Blues” and “LA Freeway.” Jacobs continued on acoustic with Waylon Jennings’ Waymore Blues” ahead of two Townes Van Zandt classics “Pancho and Lefty” and “White Freightliner Blues.” “Katie Mae” from Texas blues great Lightning Hopkins came next ahead of the oft-covered Lyle Lovett tune, “If I Had A Boat.”

Cris then picked up an electric guitar for blues legend Freddie King’s “Woman Across the River” before paying tribute to some more recent music from and about the Lone Star State with “Texas Sun” from Leon Bridges and Khruangbin’s stellar 2020 collaborative EP of the same name. The song saw Jacobs picking up a Fender Telecaster and utilizing some looping effects.

Next, Cris returned to acoustic guitar and performed the late great Jerry Jeff Walker’s hit, “Mr. Bojangles.” No Texas Troubadour set would be complete without songs from Willie Nelson and Jacobs stayed on the acoustic for covers of “Crazy” and “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain.” Cris then paid homage to Texas women with the Chicks’ “Long Time Gone” and Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz,” the latter of which saw Jacobs picking up his cigar box slide guitar. Cris would stay on the slide for a pair of Blind Willie Johnson songs, “Lord, I Just Can’t Keep From Crying” and “If I Had My Way.”

Ray Wylie Hubbard’s “Snake Farm” followed before Cris nodded to the funky soul side of Texas with Billy Preston’s “Will It Go Round in Circles” and Sly & The Family Stone’s “If You Want Me To Stay” ahead of the Stevie Ray Vaughan classic “Texas Flood,” which saw Cris playing SRV’s guitar of choice, a Fender Stratocaster. Covers from Norah Jones (“Don’t Know Why”) and Rodney Crowell would come next before Cris appropriately closed things out with Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away.”
