Jason Isbell Donating Proceeds From Morgan Wallen’s ‘Cover Me Up’ Cover To NAACP

85

Jason Isbell will donate his portion of proceeds from Morgan Wallen’s cover of “Cover Me Up” to the Nashville chapter of the NAACP. The cover appears on Wallen’s recently released album, Dangerous: The Double Album.

According to Billboard, sales of Wallen’s albums have increased after a video went viral last week showing the country performer using a racial slur. Wallen faced backlash from fellow musicians and others in the industry and was dropped from several radio stations and streaming services playlists. He later apologized for using racist language.

“His fans are likely streaming him more because they can’t hear him on the radio anymore,” Billboard’s editorial director Hannah Karp told the AP. “Some fans may be streaming him more in addition to show their support for him, which is something that super fans and fan armies often do.”

Replying to that AP story regarding Wallen’s uptick in album sales, Isbell tweeted his intent to donate his past and present royalties from “Cover Me Up” to the Nashville chapter of the NAACP. The song was written and recorded by Isbell for his 2013 solo album, Southeastern.
