Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe Presents ‘Run DMC Remixed’ In Brooklyn On This Date In 2015

70

Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe & Friends delivered a “Run DMC Remixed” set at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York City on this date in 2015. Steel guitarists Robert Randolph and Roosevelt Collier along with MCs Robbie Gallo and Matt Burke from Vokab Kompany helped KDTU pay tribute to the legendary Queens hip-hop group.

The “Run DMC Remixed” set was the second frame of the night. Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe — Karl Denson (saxophone, flute), Chris Littlefield (trumpet, flugelhorn), DJ Williams (guitar) David Veith (keyboards), Max MacVeety (drums) and Chris Stillwell (bass) — kicked off the show with Jimi Hendrix’s “Power Of Soul” followed by the funky groove of “Gold Mine.” KDTU kept the funk rolling with “Bag Of Funk” which saw Randolph joining in and tearing up the middle jam. Randolph would stay on for the bluesy rocker “When I Get Home.” KDTU went it alone on “Monk Strap” and “Everybody Knows That.” Randolph emerged once again for “Millvale, PA” and “Galaxy” the latter of which saw the band getting a little spacey and stretching the tune out to over 16 minutes. Randolph stayed aboard for the set-closing section of “Smart Boy” into “My Baby Likes To Boogaloo.”

The Run DMC Remixed set — which featured Roosevelt Collier and Randolph for the entire frame — got underway with a trio of classics in “Peter Piper,” “It’s Tricky” (which contained a “Cars” tease by Gary Numan) and “King Of Rock.” The latter saw also saw a tease, Funkadelic’s “Cosmic Slop,” and some high slide work that almost mimicked the scratching of records over even a theremin. KDTU and company then dug a bit deeper into the Run DMC catalog with “You Be Illin” the outro to which saw the man himself Karl Denson on a jazzy sax solo. The band then played a pair of Run DMC’s holiday tracks with “Back Door Santa” and “Christmas in Hollis,” a reference to the neighborhood in Queens where the hip hop trio hails from.

Gallo and Burke then took a breather as the band played Wilson Pickett’s “Get Me Back On Time, Engine No 9,” an oft sampled song by hip-hop artists including Run DMC, which then led into the classic “My Adidas” and saw the return of Gallo and Burke. After “Mary, Mary,” KDTU and Friends delivered the rock-rap crossover classic hit “Walk This Way,” which Run DMC famously performed with Aerosmith, to close out the set. KDTU and company encored with “Harlem River” ahead of the instrumental, “Running From Major,” featuring Karl Denson on some flying flute, to bring the evening to a close.
