Meshell Ndegeocello delivered an NPR Music Tiny Desk (Home) Concert. The acclaimed singer-songwriter and bassist performed a career-spanning set as part of NPR Music’s celebration of Black History Month.
Ndegeocello’s Tiny Desk performance is framed by the influence of the late great writer and activist James Baldwin. “He deserves flowers every day,” Ndegeocello told NPR. “Most of all because he was willing to discuss things that were painful, hard to look at, hard to see, hard to accept.”
Meshell begins her performance with “Step Into The Projects,” a funky tune from her 1993 debut album, Plantation Lullabies, presented for NPR as spoken word piece. Ndegeocello then welcomed longtime guitarist Chris Bruce for “Price of the Ticket” from her recent project and tribute to Baldwin, Chapter & Verse: The Gospel of James Baldwin. Meshell then picks up her bass for “Forget My Name” from her 2014 LP Comet Come To Me before closing the session with “Fool Of Me” from her 1999 album, Bitter.
