African rock band Songhoy Blues are featured in the latest installment of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’s #PlayAtHome video series. The group contributed a performance of “Barre,” a song from their 2020 studio album, Optimisme filmed in Mali.
“Barre” translates from Songhoy Blues’ native Songhai to “change” in English. “It’s like how yesterday gave today a chance, today needs to give tomorrow a chance,” lead singer Aliou Toure explained.

“This verse describes how we are condemned to respect and accept the cyclical nature of all things,” Aliou added. “We want the older generation to give space to the new generation. Especially in Mali right now, and to be honest, in Africa in general.”
