Last week, Tash Sultana celebrated the release of their highly-anticipated sophomore album, Terra Firma. As part of the Terra Firma celebration, the Australian multi-instrumentalist performed some tracks for the album during the ongoing Fortnite Championship Series.
Airing for participants in the Oceana bracket of the video game tournament, Sultana’s performance began with “Musk”, the same song that opens Terra Firma. The stream once again finds Sultana looping all of their instruments and acting as a one-person band. Back in November, Sultana revealed following a 1,000 person concert in Sydney, Australia that it would be their final show as a looping-oriented solo act.
With Sultana’s future as a full-band act, this Fortnite set took on added significance as the artist once again displayed the multi-instrumental prowess that made them a household name. From the dreamy opening electronic flutters of “Musk”, Sultana has complete control of the studio as they toggle between keyboard, bass guitar, electric guitar, drums, trumpet, and more to create a dense soundscape brick by brick.

After “Musk”, Sultana threw it back a bit with “Big Smoke” off 2018’s Flow State. Though the album was released only three years prior, when “Big Smoke” is lined up next to “Musk” it shows just how far Sultana has progressed musically in that short time. “Big Smoke” also allowed Sultana’s first opportunity of the stream to display her vocal abilities, which she incorporates into her plethora of sounds like any other instrument.
Things got thrown further back with “Mystic”, a freestanding single Sultana released in 2017 as their solo career was just beginning to sprout. With the progression of “Musk”, “Big Smoke”, and “Mystic”, fans were able to get a history of Sultana’s musical development told in reverse chronological order. This effect made the final song of the set, “Sweet and Dandy” off Terra Firma, all the more powerful as it rocked viewers back to the present and Sultana’s artistic progression became immediately apparent.
